St. Croix History And Facts 

St. Croix was originally inhabited by tribes of Arawak and Carib peoples. Christopher Columbus discovered the US Virgin Islands in 1493. Columbus believed that he had made it to India!

Leaving St. Croix, Christopher Columbus went on to new discoveries, and the Spanish abandoned the island. The Caribs continued their existence on St. Croix for about a decade following Columbus' visit.  Over time, other Europeans began making the journey to the area. In the seventeenth century, the Dutch, French, and then the  English settled St. Croix. Eventually, they abandoned their settlements, and the Spanish gained control in 1650. The French later returned and removed the Spanish from power.

St. Croix history records that the Danish bought the island back from the French in 1733. US Virgin Island history states that while the island was a part of the Danish West Indies it became a major force in sugar production.
